Q & A
Question: What is a typical day in Stuart’s life? (Ronnie from Los Angeles, California)
Answer: A typical day starts around 8 am when I wake up for practice. We have to be at the lockerroom by 8:30 AM and practice starts at 9:30. After practice I do a lot of stretching and get in the cold tub for about 10 minutes. Next comes food, because by that point I am starving! We alternate lunch spots around Houston, so I have eaten at almost every spot in Midtown! Depending on how hard the day was, I usually take an hour nap after lunch before heading to the gym or yoga around 4-5 p.m. After the gym I grab a smoothie before dinner at 7:30, then its time to relax on the couch before doing it all over the next day! Question: First, even with me being a huge Crew fan, you are one of my favorite players! What is your favorite workout routine? Do you just do massive amounts of cardio or do you mix things up? (Julie from Mount Vernon, Ohio)
Answer: I prefer not to do a lot of cardio in my workouts, because we do enough cardio in practice and games! I like doing a lot of circuits, because it keeps the intensity high and works a lot of different muscles. —–
Question: I play U13 and I was wondering how I could improve on my first touch? Thanks! By the way, it’s really cool that you have this section on your website! (Keith from Katy, Texas)
Answer: I used to kick a soccer ball (a soft one) around the house whenever I could as a kid. It would be almost glued to my foot as I was going back and forth from my bedroom, etc. Other than that all I can say is just try and work on it as often as you can after practice! (11-12-2009)
—–
Question: Why do you wear #7 with the national team? Because of Craig Biggio? You’re playing well, keep it up! (Adrian from Houston, Texas)
Answer: I wore #7 with the Olympic team and it’s a number I really like. It represents an outside winger and it was a number a lot of my favorite players wore growing up (Cantona). I actually saw Craig Biggio at Carrabbas on Kirby the other day. I should have told him I wear 7 on the national team because of him! Lol…. (11-12-2009)

—–
Question: Now that Kei Kamara is with the Wizards, who do you have prank wars with? (Megan, Missouri City, Texas)
Answer: To be honest, there haven’t been too many major pranks that have taken place recently. I can tell you that because of a bet they lost to Bobby Boswell and me, you will see Danny Cruz and Mike Chabala doing some pretty funny stuff when the season is over. It will involve them cleaning our cars in some pretty “risqué” clothing!!!! I’ll keep you posted on the details! (10-28-2009)
—–
Question: How old were you when you started playing soccer and who is your favorite soccer player? (Megan, Columbus, Ohio)
Answer: I started playing soccer as soon as I could walk. I had a ball pretty much glued to my foot when I was in the house, kicking it, juggling it, etc, which I think is one of the main reasons I have a good first touch these days. My favorite soccer player at the moment is probably Kaka, I love how he just glides around the field! (10-28-2009)

Question: How is it like to practice and play against Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey? Also will you eventually play in the EPL like Clint or stay in MLS like Landon? (Daniel, Hurricane, West Virginia)
Answer: Its always fun to play and challenge yourself against good players on a daily basis. Landon and Clint are both great players and bring a lot of intensity to practice every time they step on the field, which makes it a very fun and competitive environment. I hope to play in the EPL one day, as it has always been a dream of mine, but who knows where my future lies at the current moment in time! Thanks for the question! (10-28-2009)
—–
Question: Hey Stu, I notice you wear tape on your wrist when you play. Do you wear a special bracelet underneath? Or do you write words of encouragement on the tape? If so, what do you write?
Answer: I’m glad you asked this question, because what’s underneath the tape is actually something very special to me. When my dad passed away in February, my mom gave me his Livestrong bracelet that he had worn since the day he was diagnosed with cancer, 6 years prior. I have worn it ever since that day and refuse to take it off, which is why I tape over it during the games so nobody rips it! It means a lot to me, and it is a constant reminder of the courageous fight my dad had against Pancreatic cancer. (10-28-2009)

Question: Hey Stu, we all know you work hard on your body… how about showing the ladies some love by posting a few pics of you sans jersey??? (Joanna, Irvine, CA)

I actually think there is one of me in a bathing suit in Hawaii in my picture gallery on this website. I’ll see what I can do, maybe I can do a contest or fundraiser for charity in which I have to post some pictures “sans jersey” as you so eloquently put it!!! (10-28-2009)

Question: Stuart, great to see you’re doing so well in the States. How much of your time do you remember in Aberdeen as we played in the same juvenile team at Portlethen!!! Congrats on the way things have been going for you mate!! (Zippy, Aberdeen)
Answer: Thanks Zippy. I’m sorry to say that I don’t specifically remember you, as I was pretty young at the time, but I don’t doubt we played together, especially with that quality nickname!! I don’t remember too much, a couple trainings indoors here and there, and a couple games in the Baltic Aberdonian weather! Hope things are going well for you! (10-28-2009)

Question: Why is Manchester United your favorite football team??? (Shelby, Florida Keys)
Answer: Supporting Manchester United has been passed down through the family for generations!! My dad’s parents live just outside of Manchester and he used to go to the games every weekend as a kid, so as I grew up as a kid in Scotland, I was buying every single Man UTD “kit” that became available. No wonder they are such a rich club!!! (10-28-2009)

Question: Hi! I would like to know your favourite league in Europe? And your favourite player? And like I’m Portuguese so what do you think about Cristiano Ronaldo?? (Joana, Portugal)
Answer: My favorite league has to be the Premier League, although I must say the Spanish League is closing in on that title. They are attracting more and more good players every year, I think it has a lot to do with the climate! My favorite player in the Premier League is Ryan Giggs, he has been a top player for years and shows his class on a weekly basis! As far as Cristiano Ronaldo, he was probably my favorite player at Manchester United, but now he has gone to Real Madrid I must say he has fallen down my list a little bit. He is a great player that really keeps the crowd on edge, as you never know what he is going to do next! (10-28-2009)

Question: Stu – I think what you do is great with kids (visiting hospitals etc.), and you’re one of my favorite soccer players all time. I love watching you play. I actually went to the Philly game vs. Panama to see you play. You’re definitely setting a great example for the younger players out there that want to play professionally and internationally. I was just curious as to what made you want to give back to the community by visiting children’s hospitals etc.? I’m also curious as to what you would tell a player going through rough times in life but is still trying to succeed in soccer and go pro or play internationally? Thanks Stu, means a lot! (Morgan from Columbus, Ohio)
Answer: Hey Morgan, let me just start by saying thank you for the very kind words. I would say it all started when I would accompany my dad on his visits to MD Anderson Cancer center for his treatments. I was amazed at the number of people, including kids that were going through the same thing I was. I felt as a pro athlete and someone that kids looked up to in the community, I could really help, whether it was just talking to them about what was going on, or being someone they could laugh and joke with to take their mind of their treatment. It is something I have really enjoyed doing and something I take a lot of pride in doing and want to make sure I do throughout my career. (10-23-2009)

Question: You are one of a few players who show respect during the national anthem with hand over heart. Why do you think the other guys don’t do this? It’s not only in MLS but also on the MNT. (Margo from Houston, Texas)
Answer: Well during the national anthem, I put my hand over my heart and I think of all the good memories I’ve had during games, whether it be a pass, shot, tackle, or goal. I find that positive memories help me confidence wise in starting the game off well. I can only speak for myself, so all I can say is that different people have different ways in showing their pride. (10-23-2009)

Question: Growing up, did you play any other sports, or focus on soccer only? (Steve from Melrose, Mass.)
Answer: When I lived in Scotland I played rugby, tennis, golf, and soccer. Then when I moved to the United States at age 10, I focused primarily on soccer, although I did play point-guard on the varsity basketball team my freshman and sophomore years of high school (I had good ball skills and was a menace on defense!!!) (10-23-2009)

Question: Stu, I coach youth soccer a U10 team and a U15 team (rec). Do you have a favorite game/drill that we could use at a practice? It is a rec league so the idea is to have fun, help the players develop, and turn them into long time fans of the game. (Pokey from Rochester, Minnesota)
Answer: For the u10 team I would set up a grid about 10 x 15 yards or so. The game is called knock out. I would first have the kids work on dribbling inside the box. You can give them demands of turning in the tight area, moves, looking up to see where they are in the field. Also I would say to work on some simple boxing touches and ball taps while moving forward and backwards. Towards the end of it you pretty much just say go or “knock out” and the kids try and knock others ball out of the grid. Last man standing wins. I would repeat a few times as I’m sure they will want to as well. Make sure you show them the proper technique of shielding the ball and they will be forced to keep the ball close to themselves.
For the u15 I would just say a lot of scrimmaging would be best for them. You could do 3 teams and just keep them rotating. I know that for me the best part of practice is being able to play. (10-23-2009)

Question: How do you stay so calm and collected under the pressure and scrutiny of a game? (Megan from Oregon)
Answer: I don’t know if that was something that was born in me, because it stems all the way back to the MLS Cup Final in 2006 when Coach Kinnear asked me to take a penalty kick, to which I responded, “Absolutely.” I think I just step back and realize that at the end of the day it is just another game of soccer, a game I have been playing for 20 years now. If I am not playing so well, I just try and focus on doing the little things right again and getting my confidence going to get back involved in the game. (10-23-2009)

Question: Just wondering, how do you do a slide tackle? You are like the master at them. (Christine from Oakes)
Answer: Haha, yeah I seem to have a lot of “Strawberries” as we call them on the sides of my legs from all the slide tackles! The most important thing in a slide tackle is to be 100% sure that you can win the ball, because if you leave your feet and someone pushes the ball away then you are almost guaranteed a card of some sort. As you go to ground, make sure your tackling leg is extended and you get it across the ball first before you tackle any piece of the opposing player. After that you have to remember to get up and keep moving the ball!!!! (10-23-2009)

Question: How many tweets do you think you write a day? (Yesnia from Houston, Texas)
Answer: That’s a good question, I’ve never been “nudged” by Twitter to update, which means I at least update every 24 hours! I think on average I tweet 2-3 times a day depending on whether I am traveling or just sitting at home and answering questions. I try not to put too many boring tweets like “Dinner time”, etc. to keep it interesting for whoever is following me!! (10-23-2009)

Question: Stu, have you considered a move back to the EPL? Maybe a Blackburn, Hull, or Newcastle (when they come up). Would love to see you for Rovers. (Ryan from Baltimore, MD)

—–
Question: What happened when you were at Sunderland and how close where you to signing for the club? (Gareth from Sunderland, England)
Answer: I was signed with Sunderland on a 6-month contract with option years to follow. Unfortunately I had a couple bad injuries in my time in England, meaning at the end of the 6th month, I hadn’t done enough to warrant my contract being kept on. It’s just the way it goes sometimes, and in this case its worked out for the best! (10-23-2009)

Answer: It was either in high school when I had a cartilage graft on my right knee or when I was attacked in a taxi line in Sunderland. Both were major setbacks in my career and caused me to question at times if I was going to make it! (10-23-2009)

Question: I was wondering about how many flights you take on average per season… with both the Dynamo and the National Team. (Brandon, Austin, TX)
Answer: Give me a second, I’ll have to check my frequent flier account haha! The good thing with all the flights we take with the Dynamo is that they are with Continental and we get the air miles in our account! I’d say we probably fly about 70 times a year, that is actual flights and not trips! Great question! (10-9-2009)
