"Bowling with Stu" set for Sunday, Dec. 20
Hi everyone,
This Sunday, Dec. 20, I am hosting a fun event called “Bowling with Stu” at Palace Lanes in Houston. A portion of the proceeds will benefit “Holden’s Heroes,” a charity I’m starting that is designed to bring happiness to sick children.
In addition to three hours of bowling (2:30-5:30 p.m.), each person will also receive a limited-edition Stuart Holden scarf (pictured below). Also Chicken Kitchen will be catering the event.
We’ll also have silent auction where you can bid on some valuable items like one of my 2008 Olympics jerseys or one of my Dynamo jerseys. I’ll also have some lower priced options too so everyone can participate. You can even bid on the bowling shirt that I’ll be wearing on Sunday!
We’re going to have some different fun contests during the afternoon where people can win Stuart Holden bowling pins (really).
In order to help out some homeless people in Houston, we’re also asking people to donate some of their lightly-worn shoes. We will give the shoes to Star of Hope who will then distribute the shoes those in need. I’ve set a goal of 500 pairs of shoes, many of which are coming from my closet! Each pair of shoes that you bring will enter you into a raffle where the prize is dinner with me!
Inspired by the shoe drive, Mary Hunt, a student at Santa Fe High School, has set a goal to collect 100 coats to donate to Star of Hope! Thanks Mary!
If you are not able to attend, please consider buying a spot for a kid in Texas Children’s Hospital. I visited the kids there today (in my elf costume) and they are very excited about the opportunity.
Thanks everybody and I hope to see you on Sunday!!!

World Cup draw, Charlie Davies, and the Jefferson Award
Hey everyone! Well first off I’d just like to start by telling everyone about my upcoming “Bowling with Stu” party on December 20th. This is an event I am really excited about and have been planning for a couple weeks now, so make sure you get signed up as soon as possible as the slots are filling up quickly! I don’t want to be embarrassed on the lane, so I may or may not have been practicing in my spare time (wink!)
You can find all the details on my website www.stuholden.com !
Well I am currently on a plane to DC for the World Cup draw and the unveiling of adidas’s new World Cup soccer ball, which I am really excited to see. The event will be taking place at Union Station and the ball is actually already there in a massive Christmas box, so anyone that can make it out and be a part of the festivities will have gained some major bonus points in my books!
From DC I am taking a train to Delaware to hang out with my roommate and best friend Charlie Davies! As I’m sure you all know, Charlie and I are really close and this will be the first time I’ve seen him since his car accident in October so its going to be a great couple of days! From Delaware, I am taking a plane to the Big Apple, NYC!! Now New York is one of my favorite cities in the US because there are just so many things to do and I love the atmosphere in and around Manhattan!
The New York trip is to attend the luncheon for the Jefferson Award. Now before I tell you a little more about the activities that are planned while we are there, I really want to thank everyone that voted for me and supported me for this award. They will be narrowing it down to to finalists on Tuesday, but I have been so honored to be a part of the final 10 for such a prestigious award.
On Tuesday morning we are scheduled to ring the bell on the NASDAQ, so for all you early birds out there make sure you are tuned in! This is going to be a pretty cool experience, because I have never been on Wall Street and amongst all the trading and it is something that really interests me. I started investing a couple years ago and it has really become something I pay a lot of attention to (It is my money after all! haha), so this will be a an awesome experience.
The rest of my trip will be mostly be dedicated to leisure and doing some shopping in and around NYC, so if you are around Soho or 5th Ave, let me know!!!
Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and is gearing up for the great holiday season! Talk to you soon,
Stu
World Cup, MLS playoffs, Charlie Davies, etc.
Hey everybody! You may have been thinking, “When is Stu going to update his freaking blog??!” Or maybe you were thinking, “I get enough Stu updates on Twitter!” Or there is even a slight possibility you didn’t even notice! Regardless, I’m back and I’m going to try and get you up to speed without writing a novel! I’m going to talk about the Honduras trip, the Costa Rica game, and an update on my boy Charlie Davies 9!
Well let me just start this off with the most recent accomplishment for the U.S. National team, which has qualified for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa!! I have attached a pretty cool picture from before the game in Honduras. As you can see, there is a massive green light on my face, probably the biggest laser pointer I have ever seen!! They used that picture to find the fan that brought it into the stadium, because that could have majorly affected us during the game.
The atmosphere down in Honduras was one of the best I have played in. They made a 35,000 stadium sound and feel like 100,000. They came out flying and were attacking from all over the pitch. To be honest, we were slightly fortunate to go into halftime still at 0-0. In the locker-room at half time, Coach Bradley spoke about starting off the 2nd half with a lot of intensity and making sure that we gave it a really good go to win the game. Well the 2nd half couldn’t have started any worse. We gave away a free kick on the top of the box and their left midfielder curled in a beauty. After that, there was only one team on the field. From player 1-11, everyone really turned their games around and put the Hondurans on their heels. Conor Casey scored two well-deserved goals and then Landon Donovan put in a peach of a free-kick from the corner of the box! I had actually been begging for him to roll it to me, saying to him, “Landon I’m really feeling it, if no one follows me, roll it to me at the top of the box.” He acknowledged my statement, had one look at the goal and then smashed it in the top corner! I guess that will do!!!
The locker room after the game was bouncing! Everybody was bouncing off the walls, jumping up and down and spraying champagne everywhere you could imagine! One of the best moments of my career to date by far, not only because it was the game we qualified for the World Cup, but because of the way we did it down in Honduras in a stadium that they had previously been undefeated in.
I’m going to write a little about my best friend Charlie Davies, because I have been getting a lot of questions asking how he is doing and how the team felt when they found out his accident. Well when we all found out that Charlie was in the hospital, everyone’s first question was “Is he ok?” They told us he was in a serious, but stable condition, which was tough news to take, but comforting in the fact that it wasn’t life threatening.
Everybody wanted to go and see him at the hospital, but because he was housed in the intensive care unit, he wasn’t allowed any visitors. We had the big game against Costa Rica the next day, so we had to try and keep our focus on the game and try to make Charlie proud by winning. We didn’t manage to win, but the last gasp tying goal by Jonny Bornstein to tie the game was a pretty fitting to end to a special night in which so many people showed their support for Charlie and the whole team!
The only way I have been able to stay in contact with Charlie was through his family and best friend who are there with him at the hospital. All I can tell you know is that Charlie has seen and heard about all the support you guys have been showing him and it is really keeping him positive and motivated about making it back on the field. I spoke to him on the phone for 30 minutes two or three days ago and we were laughing and joking about all our inside jokes, and I can’t tell you how good it was to hear his voice after everything that happened!
The playoffs get started this Thursday when we play Seattle on ESPN2. Wish us luck! Thanks for checking back in and I hope you guys love my website! ( www.stuholden.com ) I will be announcing the winner of the autographed bobblehead doll on the 1st of November so sign up now, it’s your last chance!!
