Stu Holden suffers fractured fibula in match against Holland

// March 3rd, 2010 // Updates

Stu Holden suffered a fractured fibula in his right leg in the 30th minute of an exhibition match against Holland. Holden is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks. Holland, the third-ranked team in the world, defeated the USA 2-1.

Stu started the match at the right midfielder position and was playing well. After receiving a pass from Landon Donovan, Holden was tackled by Holland’s Nigel de Jong who received a yellow card caution on the play.

While Stu should recover in plenty of time for the 2010 World Cup, the timing of this injury is unfortunate because Stu has recently worked his way into Bolton’s starting line-up and has played 90 minutes in the Wanderers’ last two matches.

“It’s disappointing for Stuart because he has come into the team and done ever so well,” Bolton Wanderers manager Owen Coyle said on Bolton FC’s website. “He’s a very good player, an international player, and he has shown a real hunger and desire to do well for our football club.”

“In both games against Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves everybody saw the quality that he has so it is a blow, but the most important thing is that he returns bigger and better.”

So bummed to hear about this injury. You were the BEST player on the pitch yesterday before that ugly, unnecessary tackle. I wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. The US team needs you back! Wishing you a strong and rapid recovery.

As a Dutchman, I’d like to apologize for the horrific tackle by De Jong. It was supposed to be a FRIENDLY match, you know.
    Get well soon.

    Hello Stu,

We have met before, I’m the GM of a youth soccer club in Missouri City, Tx.

It was tough to see you and Ricardo leave the Dynamo,
but I wish you the best of luck with Bolton. Seeing you get injured yesterday was sadning, but I’m sure that you will come back stronger upon your return.

MCUSA REVOLUTION wishes you nothing but the best. All Dynamo fans miss you, but we know you will continue to do great things in the pitch with Bolton.

    Hey Stuart!

I went yesterday to the game in Amsterdam, and even I’m Dutch, I thought that it was rediculous how you’ve been tackeld. I was happy that Carlos scored though :) , you guys definitely deserved that one!! I hope you’ll get better very soon.

    Stu,
I hope you recover soon. Don’t try to rush back into competition – just make sure you train for a while and the Xrays say everything is good to go before yor risk getting tackled cleats up again.
Hope one of your buddies can settle the score when they play against Man City and Hack De Jong.
    Best Wishes,
    Ace from Houston

Thanks for keeping us updated via the Tweets Stu.
Hope the leg is getting better and that you are not getting much pain. Keep the faith. The lads had a great day yesterday against West Ham. It was your type of game and I am sure you would have popped in a goal. 13th looks better in the standing. Wanderers Rock.:)
No snow in Canada now, spring is here. Might try to fly over and catch a couple of late games in April. I will watch your health updates.

Wishing you only the best mate…

    Hey stu,
Gutted. . . absolutely gutted :( Cant believe what has happened, after being on top of your form on that game, tackling, passing, crossing you get injured. Feel really sorry for you. Disgusting tackle by De Jong, even his team mates were by the look of things. . . Shouldve been a red but these things happen, and unfortunatly it happened to my favourite player.
Im sure it wouldve been a few more goals AND a clean sheet for bolton.
Both the US after you went off, and Bolton seemed to be missing something when you went off :(
Owen Coyle must be upset about the loss of his new young star.
Hope everything gets better and hope you come back stronger than ever.
im confident you will be in World Cup. Im scottish and im supporting the US because if you win, at least Scotland can have pride about having you :)
    Good luck
    Best wishes
    Dan
